The Benoît Cocteaux estate
Since its creation, the Champagne Benoît Cocteaux has been driven by a quest for excellence. Historically located on the hills of limestone from the South Sézannais to Montgenost, the family estate progressively expanded over more than two hundred kilometres, beyond its borders from the Vallée de la Marne (Cerseuil) to the Côte des Bars (Verpillières-sur-Ource).
The Sézannais
terroir
Located in the most beautiful terroirs of the Sézannais, the vineyard draws its strength and its character from a chalky sub-soil. Hélène and Benoit, as “Récoltant-Manipulant” and independent wine-growers, work it with the greatest respect every day. They have obtained the “Haute Valeur Environnementale” (High Environmental Value) certification to practice an integrated wine-growing, giving priority to the environment protection.
Our
History
Since 1650, generations of wine-growers have been passing on the heritage of the Champagne Benoît Cocteaux to the next generation. Two families united under the same banner: Hélène and Benoît Cocteaux. We both come from the world of wine and we are the guardians of a traditional know-how.
In 1966, Eugène Cocteaux, the third generation of independent wine-growers, left the village of Aÿ-Champagne for good. He chose to settle in Montgenost, in the South of the Coteaux du Sézannais to create a new estate. He was proud of the work he has achieved and in turn, passed on his knowledge and his love for the wine to Michel, his son. The same applied for Benoît, the new generation to take over the estate. From childhood, Benoît Cocteaux has had a passion for the champagne production. As an observer, he learnt the basics of the profession with his father. He wanted to acquire strong knowledge and entered the wine school of Avize to improve and honour his grand-parents’ work, who were the first wine-growers making own champagne to be settled in the Sézannais.
Héléne also comes from a wine-growers’ family native of Cramant and Cuis (the Rivière and Bourmault families). Her parents settled in Saudoy in 1977 to work as Récoltants-Manipulants and she spent her childhood between the Coteaux du Sézannais and the Côte des Blancs. Aware that a company durability would pass through an international strategy, she spent one year in the United States to better understand this future market. When she came back to France, she started her career in tourism.
In 2003, Hélène and Benoît met each other. The beginning of a great history. From this meeting, the Champagne Benoît Cocteaux was born. The union of two origins, of two terroirs and the same dream: produce great wines of Champagne.
